Formidable Vegetable Sound System
“So infectious that the most ardent climate sceptic would have trouble staying still”- Sydney Morning Herald
Western Australia’s Formidable Vegetable Sound System are the world’s most triumphant experiment in ‘ecological electroswing’ busting out energetic, quirky mashups of speakeasy-style antique-beats with live ukulele wonk, hyperactive horns and the principles of permaculture. WAM Song of the Year and Australian Independent Music Video Award winners, the more-or-less-4-piece from Fremantle (via Melbourne), Australia have been touring both hemispheres for the past three years and aren’t about to stop now. From their unexpected debut on the main stage at Eclipse2012 Festival in Australia, Formidable Vegetable Sound System has since chalked up an impressive backlog of shows including Glastonbury Festival (UK), Shambhala Festival (Canada), Symbiosis (USA), BOOM Festival (Portugal) and Woodford Folk Festival (Australia). Realising that music is one of the best tools for bringing about cultural change, globetrotting permaculture troubadour and ukulele-strumming frontman of Formidable Vegetable Sound SystemCharlie Mgee committed himself to composing a repertoire of swingin’ tunes addressing the principles of permaculture in various musical styles ranging from ‘energy-descent electroswing’ and ‘climate-change dubstep’ to ‘peak-oil polka’ and ‘post-apocalypso’, which make for an eccentrically entertaining and unforgettable dancefloor experience when pumped through the ‘rad-ish beet-box’.
Monday 3.30pm-4.20pm

The Unusual Suspects
A 25 piece street band – 8 drummers, 6 saxes, 3 trumpets, a clarinet, a tenor horn, 2 trombones, a sousaphone, an ipod, a xylophone, a cittern and a cumbus. Unusual music in unusual times and in unusual clothes. Balkan, funky dance music for dancing in the streets (or anywhere really).
Their repertoire begins with Balkan Gypsy style pieces exploring dance grooves in varied time signatures. From their traditional Balkan pieces to their high energy originals, the Unusual Suspects are sure to get any crowd moving! Unusual beats, unusual sounds, unusual instruments, unusual looks, unusual people…
Started in 2012 by Linsey Pollak and based in the Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Maleny, this exciting band has very quickly built a strong local following, playing in the street and for Weddings, Parties ….Anything!
Sunday 7.30pm-8.30pm

Mal Webb and Kylie Morrigan
Vocal adventurer, multi-instrumentalist and looping beatboxing songwriter Mal sings his brain provoking songs using all sorts of vocal techniques, guitar, mbira, slide trumpet, trombone, chromatic harmonica and a loop recording pedal called Derek. And Kylie (who’s played with Orchestra Victoria and the likes of Stevie Wonder and Barry White!) provides violin and voice in a perfect balance to Mal’s nutsness. Their arrangements are intricate and playful. Imagine Einstein, Dr Seuss and Paganini making pancakes.

Tom is a permaculture farmer with a lifelong broad acre agricultural background. He is co-founder of the PRI Sunshine Coast Inc and PRI Luganville, Vanuatu and runs PDC and Practical Life Skills training courses on his Permaculture Demonstration Site “Maungaraeeda”. Tom has co-taught PDC courses with Geoff Lawton and has taught Permaculture courses in Australia and overseas. He is part of Geoff Lawton’s Permaculture Sustainable Consulting team and does regular personal consultations in Australia and overseas. He has extensive experience in tropical, sub tropical and dry land climates and has the ability to read large scale as well as smaller scale landscapes. With his farming background, Tom is a very hands on and practical man and is solution focused. He has extensive travel experience, integrates easily with local cultures and people and enjoys studying landscapes, buildings and the effects of climate on structures, flora and fauna.

In his workshops at CelebrATE he will show his practical approach to Food Forestry and Composting, both being long term projects that have substantially improved the quality of the soil here at Maungaraeeda.

Sunday and Monday

Jason Davies

Jason’s passion is designing Permaculture properties from unit patios and suburban house lots to acreage. He has a solid background in horticulture, running his own landscaping business for many years. After doing his Permaculture Design Certificate at the Permaculture Research Institute Sunshine Coast Inc. he embraced permaculture and now does regular consultations,  designs and maintenance for small and larger properties. Amanda Moore

Amanda has extensive experience looking after chickens as she bred different breeds for several years. She now focuses primarily on providing housing for chickens in the form of domes which will be on display on site.
In the workshop she will discuss and show the following:
– Chickens’ role in a permaculture system (role, benefits, breeds)
– Creating rotational chicken cells, fixed and mobile. What are they for and how do they function?
– Fermenting food for chickens, what is it? How to do it? Benefits to chickens.
– Permaculture plants that provide food for chickens.
– Homegrown protein sources.

Linsey Pollak

Linsey has a reputation for making and playing instruments made from rubber gloves, carrots, watering cans, chairs, brooms, bins, and other found objects. He has worked as a musical instrument maker for over 30 years and has designed a number of new wind instruments as well as specialising in woodwind instruments from Eastern Europe (having studied Macedonian bagpipes in Macedonia). He has specialised in designing and making marimbas and other tuned percussion. His ongoing obsession combines much of this: Making  music more accessible to the Community through musical instrument  making and playing workshops.
Sunday 4pm

Jodie Williams

Jodie is a qualified chef, who has worked in Noosa’s food industry for more than 25 years. Jodie’s love of the country, animals and cooking has led her to Kin Kin. Mayan Farm allows her the opportunity to produce culinary delights – from paddock to plate.

Jodie’s Black Ant Gourmet range of dips and condiments use as many locally grow ingredients as possible. Black Ant Gourmet uses Mayan Farm’s own grown free range beef, duck, chicken and pork in their catering business.  She has given new life to the bones of the original Kin Kin General Store with clever design to keep in with Kin Kin’s country theme and never-less-than-extraordinary food.  It’s a hive of creative expression with all food being free range and no spray as well as organic coffee. Jodie’s catering business Black Ant Gourmet will provide all the food for CelebrATE!

In her workshops, Jodie will demonstrate how to make sauerkraut, chutneys and jams in her workshops. Her products will also be available for sale over the two days.

Zaia Kendall

Zaia grew up in a family of musicians in Holland, and has a background in top sport and web development and design.
