The Permaculture Research Institute Sunshine Coast Inc. is an Incorporated Not for Profit Organisation founded to further education in Permaculture, Sustainability and Self Sufficiency. PRI Sunshine Coast Inc. runs permaculture courses, PDC / Permaculture Design Certificate courses and training in sustainability and self sufficiency at the Permaculture Education and Demonstration Site “Maungaraeeda” (“place of food” in the local Aboriginal language). Maungaraeeda is a self sufficient Permaculture Designed property and is owned and run by Zaia and Tom Kendall in the Noosa Hinterland village of Kin Kin on the sub tropical Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Sustainability, Self Sufficiency, Self Reliance, EMPOWERMENT!

Accredited 72 hour Permaculture Design Certificate course.

PRI Accredited Permaculture Design Certificate course with Tom Kendall

The Permaculture Design Certificate is a 72 hour theoretical course based on Bill Mollison’s Designers Manual. It teaches how we can use today’s tools and technology to create a more sustainable and equitable world for all species. Permaculture is more than just gardening, it is a design system for a sustainable and self sufficient lifestyle. The course is run by the Permaculture Research Institute Sunshine Coast Inc., taught by Tom Kendall and your certificate is accredited by PRI Australia,  recognised and well regarded world wide.

Milking the cow during the Permaculture Design Certificate course at PRI Sunshine Coast

We involve our Permaculture Design Certificate course students in the running of our farm and include a lot of hands on activities. As a PDC student you will be involved in the daily routines that come with running a Permaculture farm. This is why we limit our course intake to 15 people per PDC only. Learn to milk a cow, separate cream, make butter, cheese and yoghurt, feed our biogas bio-digester, look after chickens and goats, see holistic animal management in action, make compost, survey the land for earth works, eat healthy food produced on the farm and much, much more! By involving our students in the daily runnings of the farm, the learning experience during the 2 weeks will be enhanced, as well as give everyone the feeling of belonging to a community and strengthening the bond of the group.
With smaller student numbers we are able to cater to individual needs of the students based on their travels of the permaculture journey. We have noticed a marked integration of the curriculum and concepts with the introduction of practical components.

Permaculture meals at Maungaraeeda

Zaia cooks wholesome delicious food, grown and produced on the farm at Maungaraeeda. As we focus on smaller student numbers, we can supply most of the meals from the farm. Zaia is a holistic health coach and has studied and researched health and nutrition for the past 20+ years. Tom and Zaia invite you to share their meals with them, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and morning and afternoon tea during all course days. Middle weekend are days off and students can use the camp kitchen for those days. For some samples of Zaia’s cooking you can check out her recipes here.

During the PDC course you will be immersed in farm activities, from holistic animal management to feeding the biodigester, cream separating to yoghurt making and compost making to food forest planting. As this is a working farm with a lot of systems, everyone on the property can be fully involved in farm activities to get the most out of your stay at the permaculture farm and the PDC course. The practical activities also allow you to integrate the theoretical course material quicker.
